ABSTRACT

Similar to hakimiyyah (sovereignty) the term ‘ubudiyyah (servitude) is used by Qutb conceptually and intellectually to foster his political discourse. He uses this concept also as an essential principle in articulating his concept of sovereignty. In his analysis, Qutb argues from the Qur’an, emphasizing that the Qur’an lends the concept of ‘ubudiyyah great importance as a basic principle of Islamic creed. He then employs the relation between the two concepts hakimiyyah and ‘ubudiyyah in his confrontational theory and uses them both as a means in the distinction between Islamic and jahili societies.
