The trilateral relationship between the United States, Japan, and China may be the most important strategic triangle in the world; it is certainly the most dynamic and perplexing geometry. Japan, America’s sometime surrogate within the region, is suffering from a crisis of confidence after more than a decade of economic stagnation; China, buoyed by its rapid economic growth and brimming with confidence, is emerging as a great power in East Asia.
