ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the dilemmas of transnational Chinese youth who found themselves at the margins of both China and the West as they pursued First World citizenship.1 Chinese citizens who also had First World citizenship had access to the opportunities associated with what Aihwa Ong called “flexible citizenship” (Ong 1999). But such opportunities came at a high price, as full First World citizenship often proved elusive, even as pursuit of it eroded the PRC citizenship that Chinese youth took for granted.
