ABSTRACT

Participating in a network of projects provided the opportunity to consider the relevance of the expansive-restrictive framework to the sorts of learning environments created in contrasting sectors and organizational contexts and for employees at different levels. In Chapter 2 we saw how the framework could be applied to understanding contrasting approaches to apprenticeship and workforce development in the steel and metals sector. This chapter extends the analysis by indicating how the concept of an expansive-restrictive continuum facilitates greater understanding of the learning experiences of workers in a variety of sectors, workplace learning sites, and to individuals at various stages in their learning and working careers. Illustrations from each of the Network’s projects are provided as subsections of the chapter.
