ABSTRACT

The aims of the case studies presented in this chapter are twofold. First, they are meant to further illustrate the range, rationales and work of creative philanthropy; and second, they are meant to help explore the policies, organizational structures and practices that underlie such work, in order to develop hypotheses about the conditions under which creative approaches are most likely to develop and be sustained. We wanted to understand how foundations become creative; their governance, management and organizational characteristics; the obstacles and tensions they experience, and how these are managed; and how a creative approach is sustained over time.
