ABSTRACT
Why do foundations adopt a creative approach? Only one of the cases studied, the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust (JRCT), saw itself as ‘having been born like that’. All of the other foundations saw creative philanthropy – whatever they called this approach – as being a more or less conscious and deliberate change. In most cases, the approach had evolved through various iterations; in other cases, the change was more dramatic.
