ABSTRACT

As history teachers in the present educational climate, we face a huge and increasing challenge. Our aim is to make the subject accessible and enjoyable to pupils from diverse backgrounds, while proving to senior managers and government that history remains an essential part of the curriculum. At Key Stage 4 we are often competing against vocational courses, or more practical subjects in which it is easier for less academic students to attain the critical grades A* to C. We need therefore to make history popular with students and also to show its contribution in areas such as literacy, thinking skills and citizenship.
