ABSTRACT

Why is it that it is considered socially acceptable to be ‘not good at maths’? Few people would admit to being ‘bad’ at English, even when they are, although some will admit ruefully that they do not speak a foreign language. Of course we should be able to admit to our deficiencies-it is only in schools that we are meant to be good at everything-but many people seem to take an almost perverse pleasure in not knowing any mathematics at all.
