ABSTRACT

Shortages of international managers are becoming an increasing problem for multinational companies, and these shortages of international management talent are increasingly constraining the implementation of international strategies. In recent years a growing number of international firms have introduced talent management initiatives which often include leadership development, short-term assignments, high potential development, executive coaching and a range international opportunities. In this chapter the following issues will be addressed:

● the reasons for the shortages of international management and the emergence of international talent management as a strategic response to this problem

● the key staffing issues which act as strategic constraints on the multinational company’s ability to develop an adequate pool of global managers.
