ABSTRACT

What sociological foundations underpin a Compassionate City? Aside from its obvious theoretical links with public health ideas about Healthy Cities, how are the precepts for a Compassionate City actually derived? To put these questions another way, what is the contemporary ‘real-world’ basis for employing the language and ideas of Compassionate Cities? It is a simple matter to draw parallels between Healthy Cities and Compassionate Cities policies, but aside from internal theoretical consistency why are such policies needed in today’s world?
