ABSTRACT

The A/B system of stereo is what most of us know as left/right or X/Y stereo. In basic terms there is a time difference between the left and right signals, which represents the different time of arrival (TOA) at each ear from a fixed sound source. As the signals arrive at different times, the phase of each signal also varies. In general, the difference in signals is more noticeable at higher frequencies because of their shorter wavelength.
