ABSTRACT

Stereo is a relatively recent innovation in the television studio, particularly for the ITV network. In many ways the BBC pioneered the system in this country, being responsible for inventing the Nicam stereo system and the stereo 'sound in syncs' system currently used in the UK. They had a policy of making all programmes in stereo at an early stage, and used the period when programmes were not being transmitted nationally in stereo for training and familiarization. This has helped to iron out many problems. All major BBC studios have the equipment in place to deal fully with all aspects of stereo production and post-production, and all sound balancers are used to transmitting and recording in stereo.
