ABSTRACT

The listings magazine Radio Times was first published in September 1923. Reading through early editions you can’t help but notice that the output of the BBC services at that time was made up of individual one-off items standing in isolation. These initial broadcasts were not regular daily or weekly slots so not seen as programmes that would attract and hold or build an audience and persuade them to make an appointment to listen at a set time. At some point in the BBC’s history someone must have made a conscious decision that it would be a good idea to broadcast regular programmes in the form of a schedule or timetable.
