ABSTRACT

How is a radio programme made? Who does what and when? In this chapter we go behind the scenes and consider the basics of preparation and organisation before, during and post-production.

In their books about radio Paul Donovan (1997), Sue MacGregor (2002) and Libby Purves (2002) give valuable insights into the production of BBC Radio 4’s long running flagship breakfast news magazine programme Today and the two women, along with Olive Shapley (1996) in her autobiography, describe the pleasures and pitfalls of working on Woman’s Hour, another topical magazine programme on the same network.
