ABSTRACT
At first sight an investigation into what the Austrian school has to say about environmental issues does not look like a really exciting enterprise. Neo-Austrians such as von Mises, von Hayek, Rothbart and Kirzner are well-known proponents of the minimal state: that is, a government that focuses on the core business of providing law and order and a few other essential public goods. Does protection of the environment belong to this category in the Austrian view and has the Austrian doctrine anything noteworthy to say on environmental degradation?
