ABSTRACT

Hyperglycemia When people with type 1 diabetes are deprived of insulin for 12-48h and ketotic, exercise can worsen the hyperglycemia and ketosis. It has been suggested that physical activity be avoided if fasting glucose levels are higher than double the upper limit of normal and ketosis and caution be exercised in the cases where glucose levels are 300 mg/dl even if no ketosis is present. In the absence of very severe insulin deficiency, light-or moderate-intensity exercise would tend to decrease plasma glucose. Therefore, provided the patient feels well and urine and/or blood ketones are negative, it may not be necessary to postpone exercise based simply on hyperglycemia.
