ABSTRACT

Two strategies for increasing our physical activity look promising. Firstly, can we build a modest level of physical activity – but enough to contribute to health – into everyday activities? For example, encourage the use of stairs instead of lifts or promote walking or cycling for short journeys. In this area, the role of health professionals is essentially supportive. The second strategy is to increase enjoyable forms of exercise, many of which will involve sports participation. This is an area where medical input can be more influential.
