ABSTRACT

I sit down with my postgraduate trainees around Christmas time; they have been training for one term, and have spent a few weeks in school. I ask them how things are going; this is part of the refl ective process. Typical answers at this stage are:

I’m still very nervous in the classroom. My timing and pace were all over the place, but they’re beginning to improve. My mentor says my voice is a bit monotonous. I’m getting better at planning to learning objectives. I’m spending hours planning lessons and have no social life.
