ABSTRACT
Around the Gulf of Guinea, five European nations’ colonial rivalries left a patchwork of frontiers (27). Before 1957 the only sovereign state was Liberia, where American-sponsored settlement of freed slaves had begun in the 1820s (the British did the same in Sierra Leone without allowing independence); but by 1975 all the colonies had become independent.
