ABSTRACT

We began this volume by stating that the creation of child friendly cities is a comprehensive task that will need to draw from a broad range of specialist knowledge about human development and environmental change. This book captures only some of these understandings, drawing especially from those disciplines and professions that address the human consequences of urban environmental change. From the essays contained within these pages can be glimpsed some of the pathways towards a child friendly city. Other pathways have been well laid out previously – notably, the fundamental need for professional and institutional sensitivity both to children’s unique perceptions of built environments and to their particular social and environmental needs in urban settings. Other pathways will emerge from future discussions.
