ABSTRACT

Recent years have seen a rapidly growing public debate about the welfare of children in Australia and New Zealand. These have resonated with wider international discussions that are responding to new professional concerns about the health and well-being of young people in Western countries. The Australian popular media is awash with reportage on issues such as childhood obesity, psychic stress in children and young people, the neglected transport needs of the young, and concern about child exposure to abuse and other forms of harm.
