ABSTRACT

It is reasonable to consider whether alternatives to soccer-specific training and to formal conventional training methods have a role to play in the preparation of players. Such activities could contribute to play in generic fitness training as a supplement to a formal training programme. The existence of overlap between different training methods offers the possibility of cross-training, for example deriving a similar stimulus to the circulatory system from either of the training modes. Sports such as volleyball entail regular jumping and anticipation of ball flight and these faculties can also have relevance for soccer players.
