ABSTRACT

Contemporary anti-Americanism is in part (but only in part) a natural reaction of foreign peoples to preponderant American power. It can therefore be expected to persist so long as the preponderance remains. Of course antiAmericanism wanes and waxes according to whether America’s exercise of hegemonic power is perceived as more or less benign (as under Bill Clinton) or threatening (as under George W. Bush). Yet even the most virulent hatred of America is seldom without a touch of ambivalence. America and things American are frequently loved even as they are hated.
