ABSTRACT

When young children come into nursery, they enter a welcoming, caring environment where practitioners specially trained in the development of early-years children provide a colourful, stimulating environment for learning. Many children are intrigued and entranced, and immediately investigate the resources and the people who are there to help them. Other children are more reluctant to join in but soon overcome their initial hesitation, and they and their parents can relax. All is well. Sadly, another, and increasingly large, group of children are not able to settle down and make the most of their time there.
