ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview on mobile computing in construction, including experiences gathered through the e-site projects, and then continues with the description of a context based communication system that can help to transform the increasing quantity of data into quality information. It discusses the main issues of system design to achieve a dynamic communication environment for construction projects. Research and applications in various domains have proved the high potential of mobile computing. In the case of the construction industry is even more obvious due to the characteristics of a building site. New technologies such as the eXtensible Markup Language (XML), XML Schema, Simple Object Access Protocol and XML/Object Serialization have emerged and could solve problems for future exchanges of information. Process and product models are used as integrators for all the information needed. In order to achieve inter-operability structured information is needed instead of conventional documents and non-standard data formats.
