ABSTRACT

But not every part of the maintained system was given curricular autonomy in 1926. The third main element, the secondary schools, was bound by a prescribed curriculum until 1945. This was virtually unchanged during the period 1904-45. Except with previous permission of the Board, each secondary school was to teach ‘English language and literature, at least one language other than English, geography, history, mathematics, science, drawing, singing, manual instruction (boys), domestic subjects (girls), physical exercise and organised games.’
