ABSTRACT
Each of the major earthquakes occurring over the past decade has generated a programme of protection planning against future earthquakes. The United Nations, through its technical implementing agencies, has been instrumental in assisting national Governments to develop their protection plans. Specialist United Nations missions have visited each of the major destructive earthquakes and assisted in developing the national protection strategies to be implemented with the reconstruction.
