ABSTRACT

Location: The modem town of Cassino lies on the old Via Casilina, about eighty miles southeast of Rome and about sixty-five miles northwest of Naples. Situated on the Rapido River about eighteen miles from the Tyrrhenian Sea, the town is to be found at the foot of Monte Cairo in the Abruzzi Mountains. Just to the west lies Monte Cassino, site of the first abbey of the Benedictine order.
