ABSTRACT
Location: Equidistant from three continents—Europe, Africa, and Asia—in the center of the eastern Mediterranean Sea, the island's long, thin land mass (10 to 40 miles wide) stretches over 160 mountainous miles and is the southernmost point in Europe. Crete lies along the great earthquake belt that links Mount Vesuvius with Sicily, mainland Greece, and Anatolian Turkey.
