ABSTRACT

Joseph Strutt, in The Sports and Pastimes of the People of England (1801), described many English sports and most of them were ancient even then. We know this because FitzStephen also describes them in his twelfth-century History of London where he mentions the sports enjoyed by people on religious holidays, including, in the summer:

■ jumping ■ dancing ■ wrestling ■ throwing ■ fighting with shields

and in the winters:

■ sliding ■ sledging ■ curling ■ hockey.
