ABSTRACT
Public houses and taverns had always been centres of recreation providing for such activities as bowling, skittles, cock-fighting and hunting. Publicans were amongst the first commercial sponsors of sporting activity. Town councils also sponsored horse racing to attract people to their area, much as tourist boards and chambers of commerce do today.
