ABSTRACT
If one fact is evident from the foregoing review of English sport over eight centuries it is that no sport can be insulated from the wider society in which it is played.
We have seen that gentlemen have used their recreations as badges of social and physical superiority over the lower orders and we have also seen how this has been modified but maintained throughout the centuries.
