ABSTRACT

If lifelong learning is to become a reality it will involve transformations across a variety of environments and organizations which are driven by social, environmental and cultural values and concerns rather than narrow economistic ones. In this chapter the author, who has been heavily involved in European initiatives in this area, documents and highlights some of the significant changes which have been taking place, and which need to happen, in relation to developments in learning cities and regions in order to develop the spatial dimension of lifelong learning.
