ABSTRACT

From early on in my life I have always focused on particular phrases or incidents which seemed to offer the promise of breakthroughs in meaning or experience. Sartre has called these ‘spontaneous moments’, others have named them ‘critical incidents’ or in the 1960s ‘happenings’ or ‘teachable moments’. For my own part, I have sought out these moments and have called them in my own journals and thoughts ‘pedagogic moments’.
