ABSTRACT

No twentieth-century dictator wielded as much power as Stalin did. Countless books have been written about him, and his character continues to attract attention from historians, psychologists, philosophers, sociologists, writers and artists. During his lifetime, six Soviet towns proudly bore his name.1 There was even a project to rename Moscow ‘Stalinodar’ (Stalin’s gift), but the leader quashed the idea.2
