ABSTRACT
The implicit point of reference in most academic writing is the large organization with its functional differentiation, the relatively large number of organizational members and the relatively elaborated specialization. Yet, in terms of sheer numbers these organizations are a clear minority in Europe and most of the world. Instead, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) constitute the majority of organizations. Therefore, it is surprising that this type of organization is not included in scientific research much more often.
