ABSTRACT
The concept of national service can indeed be viewed as an important leap in the history of warfare. With its introduction, the European armies expanded beyond any previously imagined sizes. These reforms were connected with the concept of the citizen-at-arms and fit into the process of an emerging new social order at the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth centuries. The development also points towards the total wars of the twentieth century.
