ABSTRACT

Bill Reef, the race director of the “Bolder Boulder” event in Colorado found himself at the center of a controversy when he restricted Kenyan entrants to three. Reef’s defense was that Kenyans were not as media-friendly as their American counterparts and the race sponsors were concerned about the way in which Kenyans were dominating. In 1996, Kenyans took eight of the first ten places; in 1997, they took seven of the first eight. Reef was insuring against a repetition in 1998.
