ABSTRACT

Opening the anthology was a piece by André Labarthe called ‘The True France’. It set the tone and direction not only of this particular publication but of La France Libre, the journal Labarthe founded in London, and of numerous books, essays and memoirs by Francophiles and Anglophiles promoting the relationship of Britain and French Resistance. Titles such as This is Not The End of France (Gustav Winter), France Still Lives (‘Michael’), One Enemy Only – the Invader (Paul Simon) and France Is a Democracy (Louis Lévy), expressed a determination that was also a rediscovery of two cultures. Labarthe’s own piece concluded: ‘France will remain faithful to her historic ideal.’
