ABSTRACT

In the spring of 2005 Drs John and Virginia Doherty, husband and wife physicians, were reflecting on their house, located in a pleasant suburb of a city in Tennessee. Since they purchased the house 20 years ago their two sons had completed university and moved away. In some respects the house seemed empty without the children, and the childrens’ friends, cars and mess. However, it seemed that they were being visited by an increasing number of old friends, now similarly child-free, who were staying a few days. Yet again, they found themselves contemplating the space over the garage. A few years ago it seemed like a good idea to turn this storage space into a study, to allow the parents to escape the noise generated by the children. Now there is peace and quiet, and the Dohertys are wondering about creating a guest suite.
