ABSTRACT
On 15 March 1993 V. S. Naipaul was awarded the first David Cohen
British Literature Prize. This prize, administered by the Arts Council of
Great Britain (now the Arts Council of England), sought to be the supreme
accolade for a living British writer and was awarded for a lifetime’s work.
