ABSTRACT

The following discussion originally took place at the University of

London’s Centre for African and Asian Literatures and focuses on Nadine

Gordimer’s new collection of short stories, Loot (2003). Born in 1923,

Gordimer has consistently condemned the apartheid regime in South

Africa. Unlike many others of her generation, she not only chose to remain

in South Africa during this difficult period, but became centrally involved

with the activities of the African National Congress and the struggle for

freedom. In this interview she discusses the South African world in which

she lived both during the apartheid years and since apartheid was formally

lifted in 1994.
