ABSTRACT

Kelly (1998) has recently described the typical contemporary workplace as one in which employee discontent has grown alongside distrust of management, while Bryson and McKay (1997:28) have demonstrated that there has been a significant underlying deterioration over time in employees’ perceptions of workplace relations. In this chapter we report on research that contributes to the growing weight of evidence and argument of this kind supporting the thesis that oppositional attitudes and subversive behaviour continue to be widespread in the workplaces of late modern capitalism.
