ABSTRACT
Given the choice, I probably wouldn’t start from here, but experience tells me that I need to. Many teachers are worried about child abuse; not just because they only hear about it when a child dies, but because they fear they could become the subject of an investigation themselves in circumstances that might end their careers. There has been a significant increase in the past few years in the number of allegations made against teachers by children. Everyone appears to know someone who has been affected, which seems to have generated the widespread perception that the best interests of children are being over-promoted at the expense of those who work with them, especially in education.
