ABSTRACT

Different governments around the world have been experimenting with different types of secondary school since secondary education began. In England and Wales the ‘Specialist Schools Programme’ began in 1994 and by 2005 the majority of secondaries were Specialist Schools. Ten areas of specialism were open to schools to develop: technology, languages, science, engineering, sports, arts, business and enterprise, mathematics and computing, music and humanities. Schools can combine two specialisms.
