ABSTRACT
All of the economic, social and political changes that have taken place in China have been experienced by men and women of all classes, but they have not necessarily been experienced equally or in the same way. According to the popular political cliché, women ‘hold up half the sky’ but it is very unlikely that most Chinese women would consider that they were treated as genuinely equal to men.
