ABSTRACT
The relationship between Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) remains an enigma to outsiders. The existence of two separate Chinese states, neither of which recognises the other, is one of the more bizarre political hangovers from the Cold War. The situation makes no sense without some understanding of the historical process by which this situation arose in the 1940s and 1950s.
