ABSTRACT
Science, like other human activities, is one response to our need to understand the world. The way it does so differs from possibly competing activities like religion, mythology, or for that matter common sense. And it claims to provide objective explanations superior in respects we value to these alternatives. These claims have been controverted in recent decades and need to be justified.
