ABSTRACT

To get a television programme off the ground you need a team ofhard-working enthusiasts who can pool their skills and experience. This team is known as ‘production’. Television is a producer-led medium and the producer is the head of a television production team. He or she starts the process of creating a show, and then goes about getting the money to make the show, and selecting the production personnel. It is the producer who selects the writer, and also picks the technical crew with the assistance of the director. The producer has overall responsibility for everything to do with the show. This includes the key matter of the budget, as well as health and safety considerations for location filming and for actually getting the programme on the air. This is a creative job for a flexible, seasoned and experienced professional, and well worth aspiring to. It is the producer who has the creative power and delivers the programmes. It is the producer who takes the blame, enjoys the fame, and accepts the BAFTA.
