ABSTRACT

The format of this chapter is slightly different in that it is made up of a number of case studies which you are invited to read and reflect on.

CASE STUDY 1: PLAYING AT HOME

It is a hot, sunny day. Two children (we will call them Anna and Sam) are playing out in the garden. The adult with them has taped some sheets of paper to the wall, mixed some paints and offered them brushes and palettes for mixing colours. Both children get excited at the paper on the wall and start painting, but quickly lose interest and the paints are left to dry in the sun. The adult with them is interested in this and also eager to find something that will happily occupy them both. She has no interest in ‘teaching’ them anything.
